Most plaster is based on gypsum, lime or cement, and they all behave in much the same way. It comes as a dry powder, gets mixed with water into a stiff but workable paste, and goes straight onto the surface. The reaction with the water gives off a little heat, and the plaster then sets hard.
Once it is on, plaster works easily with metal tools or even sandpaper, and it can be moulded on site or cast into sections beforehand and fixed in place with adhesive. It is a finishing material rather than a load-bearing one, so a decorative section laid on thick may need a hidden metal frame behind it.
